“People are made to be loved and things are made to be used. The confusion in this world is that people are used and things are loved.” Author Unknown.

WHEN couples struggle financially, we also see an increase in domestic arguments, breakups, and chaos. It’s difficult to show love toward your partner if you are worried about paying your cell phone bill, car payment and house rent. Research in this area is finding that materialistic people have unhappier marriages than couples who don’t care much about possessions.

The more you value money, the more troubles you suffer at home, because work usually comes first, and after work is done, people have left you and moved on. Your intimate relationships many a times no longer exist.

Materialism causes spouses to make bad financial decisions such as spending beyond their means, which puts them in debt and stresses the marriage. People who are materialistic are working more to “get things.”

How do we value our partner, and still work hard enough to make our payments, live in a nice neighborhood, send our kids to nice schools, and splurge on a special gift for the holidays?

These five tips may help:
No matter how hard you work, if you communicate with your spouse each day, letting them know something as simple as, “I am thinking about you,” you will be nurturing your relationship.

Balance is everything. At times that is difficult and unattainable. When you know in advance that work will be consuming a lot of your time, tell your partner in advance so they can mentally prepare. Take them to dinner or spend extra time with them prior to the week or month that you need to focus on work. Remind them by saying something such as, “I am glad we have this time together, because next week (or next month) is going to be very demanding at work.” This tells your partner they are more important to you than money.

Have a family day. One day a week is sacred to families. Shut all communication off on that day. Program that day into your Blackberry, iPhone or whatever device you have so you won’t schedule business.

Husbands, wives, and children all like nice things, but they love you. Their love is a gift, not something you will get paid for. No amount of money or nice things you can ever acquire will replace this love.

As a family, it’s nice to have a charity to which you give every year. Let the kids be part of planning which charity means the most to them. Teaching your children early to value life rather than material is very important.

Cigarette smoking in Nigeria used to be an exclusive preserve of the male gender in the past, but with modernisation, it appears the trend is changing as Nigerian women, especially the youth, are now taking to smoking, writes Tribune Newspaper Nigeria.

It was a Friday night, and expectedly, fun lovers-guys and ladies alike-gathered to have fun. The regulars were at hand—red lights, heart-shaking cacophony coming out of speakers and alcoholic drinks. Not that the scene was unusual. As a matter of fact, clubbing, or gathering together to enjoy music-spiced fun, is as old as civilisation itself. It is also a known fact that human nature abhors vacuum, something must spice living or else ‘it’ won’t be worth it.

However, clubbing and night parties in this part of the world were dominated by the male gender for a very long period. The few women who made it to the club houses and the dance parties were regarded as the bad ones and they were few then. Majority of them were students of higher institutions who where kilometres away from the prying eyes of their parents. That was the age the number of guys in night parties more than quadruple that of girls who, most of the time, accompanied their boyfriends to the parties. Then, guys who brought ladies to night parties were regarded as “big boys”, while boys who managed to secure a dance with a lady would see it as an achievement.

Such was the dominance of the male gender at night parties and club houses some decades ago. The dominance also goes beyond the numerical dominance; guys were also in full control of the attendant activities that go with night gatherings such as drinking and smoking.

In fact, it was a taboo to see a lady smoking cigarette in the past. But with the passing of time, the popular saying that “what a man can do, a woman can do better” would later be used, albeit by Nigerian women, to challenge male dominance of fun, smoking, consumption of alcoholics and debauchery in general.

Nigerian ladies have risen to the challenge and are not showing any sign of waning.

Years ago, ladies that smoked and drank alcohol could be counted. It was inviolable of sort to be seen with a stick of ‘stogie’. But nowadays, more and more Nigerian young girls are taking up smoking and it is no more a surprise seeing girls smoking. The resentment many had for women cigarette smokers is gradually disappearing and girls are more determined to prove that they could do better in areas men had held sway.

Though the Nigerian society still resent female cigarette smokers, the club houses and drinking spots where many young girls now spend a considerable part of their time, don’t. The number of women—middle age and teenagers alike—in club houses these days is growing. And they are not just there to make up the numbers, they are key participants. It appears they don’t want to be left out of the fun that the male had maintained a lead over the years.

In clubs and drinking spots, they now have a presence that competes favourably with that of the male gender. Apart from this, they now thread on surfaces that used to be an exclusive preserve of men.

This position can be easily affirmed by a trip to night clubs in the major Nigerian cities. From the Sharia-dominated north to the largely Christian south, young ladies, especially from higher institutions of learning, boldly smoke, and guzzle liquor to show that “they belong.”

At a club house in Ibadan, a group of ladies, an admixture of teenagers and young adults, appeared out of the blues demanding for beers. Few minutes after, one of them brought out a packet of cigarette and a couple of them started smoking. Suddenly, the light went out and dimmed light from cigarette dotted the hall like a convergence of witches.

The above scenario will pale into insignificance if one visits a brothel or hotel where prostitutes regularly gather. These days, it now appears that cigarette smoking, at least, is a sine qua non for prostitution and without it, a woman cannot make it in the ‘old profession.’

Blessing, a teenager who only finished her secondary school education in 2010 told Tribune Newspaper Nigeria that she took to smoking last year because she saw a couple of her friends smoking. “I never thought I would smoke. Often, I see some girls do it and I actually dislike it. But somehow, I have started smoking too,” she admitted.

Really, there have been grave concerns over the increasing rate at which women now smoke cigarette. The recently released statistics by the World Health Organisation (WHO) of an increasing global trend of women and girls who have taken to the deadly habit of tobacco smoking is scary. Of the 5.4 million victims that die every year, 1.5 million are girls and women. The report also stated that half of the 151 countries surveyed, approximately as many girls use tobacco as boys.

Unlike the Asian and European countries where many often say that the weather and the freedom enjoyed by females allow them to smoke and drink without raising eyebrows, the sudden rise in the number of ladies smoking and boozing has got many fearing that there could be more women smokers than male ones in the nearest future.

However, for those trying to ape European ladies who smoke on the excuse that it warms them up from inside in the cold region, Dr. Adeyefa Adeniran of All Souls Medical Centre, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, says it’s not true as cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption does not warm up human beings.

“It’s the norm in Europe among the ladies, smoking and drinking has nothing to do with the weather. The proven fact is that cigarette smoking kills, but millions still smoke despite the glaring warnings on cigarette packs. Do you know why? It’s because the nicotine in it is addictive”. Latest reports indicate that out of the more than one billion smokers worldwide, 250 million are women. About 5.5 per cent of them die annually from smoking-related ailments, corroborating Dr. Adeyefa’s statement.

In Nigeria, a recent study shows that there are more than 13 million active cigarette smokers, out of which about 1.5 million are women. This is the warning signal that shows that cigarette smoking has gained foothold among Nigerian women, especially the young ones.

According to another medical expert, Dr John Ademola, at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, “the number of women that smoke would triple over the next generation and millions will die prematurely if nothing is done about it,” he observed.

But danger lurks ahead for women cigarette smokers.

He says research has shown that smoking affects the human cardio vascular system, lung function, reproductive system and bone density, adding that smoking accounts for nearly one in three cancer deaths worldwide. He listed other major health problems peculiar to women cigarette smokers as menstrual problems, pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and premature menopause.

The medical practitioner also added that smoking constitute higher risks to pregnant women. He said that smoking could lower the amount of oxygen available to a pregnant woman and her baby, increase a baby’s heart rate, increase the chances of miscarriage and stillbirth and increase the likelihood of premature birth and low birth weight.

Dr. Adeyefa also adds that the same disease that affects males, “throat, bronchitis, trachea and lung cancer”, are suffered by females.

For pregnant women who smoke, the babies are easily exposed to diseases such as liver and cerebral problems. “They also weigh less than 3 kilograms, which is not good. These diseases have no cure”, he warns.

Another concern for female cigarette smokers is addiction. The U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention found that while 29 percent of male smokers have been able to quit, only 19 per cent of female smokers have permanently broken the habit. Women are three times more likely than men to relapse while trying to quit smoking without any help, the centre stated.

According to Dr Ademola, “while men smoke to feel more alert and vigorous, enjoying the positive feelings associated with smoking, women smoke because they find it relaxing.

He added that while nicotine appears to promote aggression in men, it has a calming effect on women. Women also appear to be more likely to take up smoking to help control theirs.

A Psychologist, Mr Tayo Abejide, added that the new strategy being used by manufacturers and marketers of cigarettes is to link smoking with attractiveness, which easily fascinates young girls, ultimately making them helpless victims.

“There is this erroneous belief that smoking offers some relief, even if temporarily. Up North, seasonal harsh weather sometimes induces more people into smoking. Unfortunately, they end up harming their pulmonary system more than they care to know”’, he said.

“Advertisers also lure young smokers so that they can be hooked on nicotine for many years”, added Dr. Adeyefa.

Another reason Mr Abejide gave for the rise in smoking among women is lack of watch by parents over their wards. “Many of the girls pick up this attitude while leaving at home with their parents. Since they do it most of the time in the nightclubs, bars and other similar places of entertainment, the question is, how these girls, including teenagers, became so free that they spend nights outside of home? This is where the root of the problem,” he stated.

Without these girls, however, club owners will have no business to run.

“They are the salt of showbiz, without women, guys who spend the money won’t come here to spend money on drinks and ladies. On Wednesdays when we have our ladies night, we make between N1.3 and 2 million. There is no way we can make such an amount if there are no women available. Women in a way are the reasons why men patronise clubs”.

But what is responsible for the upsurge in the number of female cigarette smokers in Nigeria? A female student at Lead City University, Ibadan, who prefers not to be named, said that in some circus, ladies who don’t smoke or drink “are not considered big girls and are therefore not respected.”

“When you see girls ‘puffing away’ in a club, the first impression is that such girls are “bad”, or loose. However, many girls want to be labelled such because it draws attention to them from the guys. It’s like guys immediately label them as sluts to be taken away and for the girls, it is like, ‘these are my wares; do you wanna buy? Smoking and drinking sells them”.As reported by Tribune Newspaper Nigeria.

The Federal Government is at the verge of disbursing $200 million to the entertainment industry.

The Minister of Infor-mation, Mr. Labaran Maku, disclosed this while speaking at the occasion of the National Creativity Day Celebration in Abuja.

Mr. Maku said that this was as a result of the potentials that abound in the creative industry.

The minister said: “the creative industry today is the mainstay of the economies of many countries of the world due to their consistency and commitment to developing an industry that holds great promise for economic growth and job creation.

“It is in line with this that the recent transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan has identified the entertainment industry as a key sector for wealth creation, economic growth and national development.

Mr. Maku also revealed that the Ministry of Information was at the verge of presenting the Motion Picture Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MOPICON) bill to the Federal Executive Council. According to him, the bill aims to professionalise the film sector and bring it in line with best global practices.

The minister also added that the government, through the Nigerian Film Corporation, has commenced critical funding and development of hostels, sound studio, photography, laboratory and other critical infrastructure at the institute’s permanent site at Lamingo, Plateau State.

Police in Rivers State said they have one Jim Zaccheus in their custody, for allegedly killing and secretly burying his girlfriend in his room on Saturday, last week, in the Elechi Beach end of Diobu, Port Harcourt.

The state Police Commissioner, Mohammed Indabawa, who revealed this during his maiden press briefing in Port Harcourt, on Wednesday, also said the command had arrested four out of seven suspects who gang-raped a 14-year-old girl in the Rumuodonmaya area of the city.

Indabawa, who recently took office as police chief for Rivers, also said he planned to continue with the fight against entrenched corruption among officers and men of the command, adding that he would use everything in his powers to reduce crime rate in the state.

Indabawa, who said the command would charge Zaccheus to court for the criminal act, added that the suspect had been accused of killing his girlfriend, who was identified as Peace Mathias and carefully buried her corpse in his room, to conceal the act.

Tribune Newspaper Nigeria leant that the suspect had been suspicious of his victim over a new hair style she made and demanded to know how she got the money, a situation that led to a quarrel between them.

Not satisfied with her explanation, Zaccheus was said to have beaten her to a pulp, while she died in the process, although it was not clear if he used any object on her.

However, neighbours had suspected the movements of the suspect, coupled with stench that was oozing out of the room and had alerted security operatives who forced the door open and exhumed the victim’s decomposing body.

“The suspect was arrested yesterday (Tuesday) and has confessed to the crime. We are yet to contact the parents of the deceased, but investigation on the incident is still on,” the police commissioner said.Report by Tribune Newspaper Nigeria.

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, as the most suitable of all the aspirants to the presidency of the World Bank and urged Africa and the world to support her.
In a statement in Abuja by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party described Dr Okonjo-Iweala as a global citizen, whose critical roles in global financial circles had positioned her as an eagle on the tallest iroko in contest for the leadership of the world’s apex financial institution.

The statement said, “She is without doubt the best person to lead the World Bank at this material time of global economic challenges. Her decades-long track record of excellence in financial management, locally and internationally is a score card, a rare type that the global community is in dire need of at the moment.”

According to the party, the instantaneous worldwide acclaim and endorsement which her aspiration has been receiving since she declared her intention only confirms the popular saying that a golden fish has no hiding place.

“Her distinction in character, definitive professional capacity and integrity cannot escape the watchful eyes of the international community. We are not therefore surprised at the flow of global support,” the statement added.

The party commended all countries and international organisations who have risen beyond politics to emphatically declare their support for Dr Okonjo-Iweala.

“We commend all the nations and organisations that have declared support for this great daughter of Africa. We commend the Federal Government and the National Assembly for championing this noble cause. We appeal to the conscience of the international community to step aside politics and do the best in the interest of the entire world”, it noted.

Written by Tribune Newspaper Nigeria, Abuja Monday, 30 January 2012.

THE United Nations (UN) and African Union Commission (AUC) have thrown their weights behind President Goodluck Jonathan’s effort to tackle the menace of members of the Islamic religious sect, Boko Haram, which has led to the death of many people in the country.

The UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-Moon and the AUC chairperson, Dr Jean Ping, gave this indication in their separate remarks at the opening of the 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday.

According to Ban, the UN was working closely with AU to address what he described as transnational challenges in West Africa, including terrorism, illicit drug trafficking and the rise of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

He said: “With respect to Nigeria, I am deeply troubled by the indiscriminate and unacceptable violent attacks. No cause justifies terror.

“We stand in solidarity with the authorities and the people of Nigeria for democratic and accountable governance.”

He urged African leaders to adopt a preventive approach to human rights, as he observed that the Arab Spring took many by surprise with traditional indicators showing that the countries were stable or doing well.

The UN scribe noted that below the surface of the indicators, there were deprivation, exclusion and abuse among others, adding that “events have proved that repression is a dead-end. Police power is no match for people power seeking dignity and justice.

“The women and men protesting in streets and public squares across the region are both an inspiration and a reminder.

“A reminder that leaders must listen to their people…that all of us must do more.”

He further stated that even though trade and investment were crucial for development, Africa’s future depended on investments in civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

Ban identified discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity as one form of discrimination which, he said, had been ignored or even sanctioned by many states for too long.

In his remark, Ping regretted that over the past months, the continent had witnessed a resurgence of terrorism, particularly in Nigeria.

“I take this opportunity to reiterate the strong condemnation by the AU of the criminal attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups, and to reiterate our support for the efforts of the government of Nigeria,” he added.

The AUC chairperson said although considerable progress had been made in the areas of creating an atmosphere of peace on the continent, there was still a long way to go in order to fully live up to the commitments made, noting that the violence and contestations which often mark elections in Africa remind the people of the continent, sometimes in a tragic way, of this fact.

Cholesterol-lowering drugs known as statins are among the most commonly prescribed drugs in the hospital. Statins work by interfering with an enzyme that the body needs to make cholesterol. Along with lowering cholesterol, the drugs may also help the body reabsorb cholesterol that has accumulated on the artery walls, thus preventing further blockage.

Statin drugs are not without risks themselves, even their safety and effectiveness are currently being hotly debated. Many people taking statin complain of pain or numbness in the extremities like fingers and toes as well as cognitive problems. Nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, constipation, headaches and skin rash are their known side effects

Its other side effects include increase in blood glucose levels, tendon problems and increase in liver enzymes, leading to permanent liver damage. Because of this latter risk, people taking the drugs must have their liver function tested periodically.

Though, statin drugs do lower cholesterol very well, other food items suggested to be helpful in lowering cholesterol include vinegar and cocoa, thus making them panacea to preventing heart disease.

Researchers believe that vinegar can boost good cholesterol levels. They suggested that a spoonful or two of vinegar a day may help to boost good cholesterol levels. A clinical trial, conducted by the University of Minnesota, in the United States of America, which looked at 120 people, half of whom had the vinegar while the others were given a placebo containing a two per cent balsamic vinegar solution in water, indicated that people who consume apple cider vinegar for eight weeks had improved levels of good or HDL cholesterol compared with those given a placebo.

Ironically, benefits of apple cider vinegar, a common kitchen remedy for arthritis and gout are many. It has already been shown to lower blood sugar levels and reduce appetite. A separate study based on animals with diabetes showed that apple cider vinegar lowered levels of bad cholesterol and improved good cholesterol.

What is more, a combination of cocoa and skimmed milk may beneficially affect cholesterol levels in the blood of people that are at high-risk of cardiovascular disease, According to new data from Spain, daily consumption of 40 grammes of cocoa powder and 500 mL of skimmed milk for four weeks was associated with increases in HDL (good) cholesterol levels, and reductions in levels of oxidised LDL (bad) cholesterol.

Scientists from the University of Barcelona in a report that provided further evidence for recommending regular consumption of cocoa as a useful tool against risk factors for [coronary heart disease] wrote in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases that milk plus cocoa was associated with a five per cent increase in HDL cholesterol levels, compared to only milk. In addition, cocoa plus milk was associated with a 14 per cent reduction in oxidised LDL cholesterol levels, compared to milk only.

While it is known that consumption of cocoa polyphenols may boost HDL cholesterol levels, and decrease LDL cholesterol levels, the Japanese researchers stated that “the mechanisms responsible for these effects of cocoa on cholesterol metabolism is yet to be fully elucidated”.

To date studies have reported potential benefits of cocoa for cardiovascular health, skin health, and even brain health.

Following the raging rumour of a plan by some people to disrupt the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Jos, Plateau State, an exodus of people has gripped the city with people fleeing the state capital to avoid being caught in the alleged planned attack.

In the past one week, some yet to be identified people have been dropping threat letters at various strategic places in Jos, mostly churches and other public places notifying them to prepare for an attack between the Christmas and New Year period. They have also threatened to bomb some public buildings within city.

As result of this, people had become apprehensive and those who did not want to experience a replica of an ugly situation that characterised last year’s Christmas where multiple bomb blast rocked the city on the eve of the Christmas, were fleeing the city in droves.

A visit to major motor parks within the town revealed that a large number of people are travelling out despite repeated assurance by the law enforcement agencies that adequate security measures had been put in place to curtail any act of violence within the state capital and its environs.

Saturday Tribune Newspaper Nigeria findings revealed that since the threat letters were circulated, most residents of the tin city had been avoiding public places, especially drinking joints like plaque while people seldom keep late night for fear of being attacked.

Our correspondent, who went round the city, discovered that more men of the Special Task Force and the Police have been drafted to various flashpoints within the state capital, while armoured tank vehicles stationed at strategic points with operatives on constant patrol.

Speaking with Saturday Tribune Newspaper Nigeria, the spokesman of the STF, Captain Charles Ekeocha enjoined the people, especially the resident of Jos to go about their lawful businesses, assuring that adequate security arrangements had been made to have peaceful celebrations.

He charged them to be more vigilant and report any suspicious movement to the appropriate authority as well as avoid taking the law into their hand and shun rumour mongering.

The state Police Command, in a statement made available to Saturday Tribune, banned the movement of motorcycles from 6:00 p.m on December 25 and 26, 2011, adding that the decision was taken after due consultation with the executive of the Motorcycle Riders Association in the state.

The statement explained that the measure was taken to ensure a peaceful and violent-free Christmas celebration and warned that any person who flouted the directive would be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.

The Commissioner of Police assured the people of adequate security of lives and properties, as the command and other security agencies were fully committed to the provision of comprehensive security in the state.

No fewer than 425 persons, including policemen and soldiers, have been killed this year by the fundamentalist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

An international rights group, Human Rights Watch, which gave the figure added that Boko Haram killed 800 people in 2009.

It put the number of policemen that lost their lives to the activities of the sect this year at 70 as against 30 in 2009.

The casualty figures were contained in a statement made available to our correspondent on Tuesday by the HRW.

According to the statement by the group’s Senior West Africa Researcher, Corinne Dufka, last Saturday’s attacks by the sect in Yobe and Borno states were “indefensible.”

Dufka said, “Boko Haram has once again demonstrated its utter disregard for human life. The authorities should act swiftly to bring to justice those responsible for these terrible crimes and for earlier attacks that left hundreds dead.”

HRW stated that the latest attacks, “including an apparent suicide car bombing” in Damaturu, Potiskum and Maiduguri on November 4 alone, “resulted in the highest death toll in a single day since Boko Haram began its campaign of violence in Nigeria in July 2009.”

According to Dufka, those killed this year included soldiers, community leaders, politicians, Islamic clerics, pastors and church members.

The HRW, which stated that it had documented “serious abuses, including extrajudicial executions, by the Nigerian Police and military in response to the Boko Haram violence,” urged the Federal Government to ensure that security agencies complied with international human rights standard in their operations.

It said, “The Nigerian authorities need to ensure that all law enforcement operations in response to Boko Haram are conducted in full accordance with international human rights standards.

“The most effective way to counter the abhorrent tactics employed by groups like Boko Haram is to scrupulously adhere to respect for human rights and the rule of law.”

Twenty-four persons were killed and more than 100 others injured in a suicide car bomb attack, which the group claimed responsibility for at the United Nations, Abuja, on August 26.

Dufka also recalled that more than 800 people, including 30 police officers, died in July 2009 in a five-day clash between Boko Haram, and members of the security forces in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi and Kano states.

The HRW therefore urged the Federal Government to act speedily to bring those behind the attacks in the country to book.Reported by Tribune Newspaper Nigeria.
